Velvetones Win Engraved Trophy: Friday the thirteenth did not prove to be unlucky for the Velvetones this April 13, as, on that day, the group won first place in the county talent show sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce at the Robinson Grand Theater.
The Velvetones, a singing octet with piano accompanist, have been working together for three years. They have sung for various clubs, banquets, dinners, and churches. Last year, the group, representing Washington Irving, won first place in the county talent show sponsored by Broida's at the Carmichael Auditorium.
Those making up the group are Sopranos, Jane Davis and Rae Ann Varner; Altos, Sharon Conwell and Dianne Moffett; Tenors, Bill Arnett, John Harpold, and Bob Gainer; Baritones, Jack McWhorter and Bill Bowie; and accompanist Steve Snyder. The members of the group are now Seniors.
The Velvetones, wearing red and white blazers and dark suits chose "Tuxedo Junction" and "I've Been Working on the Railroad" as their winning songs.
Second place winners were Marlene Tiano and Mary Ann Mouman from Notre Dame who played the "Theme from the Apartment", a piano duet. Bob Hooten, from Roosevelt Wilson, won third place with a piano solo entitled "Dizzy Fingers".
